White Cube / Black Box

Art in the Container – Contemporary Art in School

Kunsthaus Dresden, Städtische Galerie für Gegenwartskunst, in cooperation with the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium, 30. Mittelschule Dresden-Neustadt and Vitzthum-Gymnasium in Dresden, as well as pupils from Mittelschule Weixdorf, the Dreikönigsgymnasium and the Evangelisches Kreuzgymnasium.

Funded by the Sächsische Staatsministerium für Kultus and the European Social Fund in the framework of the idea competition ›Heraus-Forderung! Ganzheitliches Lernen im Projekt!‹

Project duration: September 2009 to July 2011

›White Cube / Black Box‹ is a project of pupils, initiated by Kunsthaus Dresden. The foremost aim of the project is to bring architecture, design and contemporary art to schools in an holistic process. Based on containers, a temporary art space emerges. The exhibition building is designed by youths and travels from school to school. Until the summer of 2011, the project seeks to develop three exhibitions that by means of contemporary art address topics related to the everyday life of youths and adults in various ways.

In spring of 2010, the first joint exhibition dedicated to the term ›Luxury‹ was successfully presented on the premises of the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium. Questions were raised as to what we understand as luxury and what kind of luxury is still up-to-date today.

The second show has been on view from November 6 - December 5, 2010. The jointly chosen theme is the future. In an experimental way, a view is cast to the year 2050, which all those involved in the project can experience. Personal hopes and common ideals, utopias but also justified doubts about them; the question of preserving values and the validity of design and architecture are the subject of the architectural and design-oriented conceptions, as well as the artistic projects and spatial designs on view in the show.

Early February 2011 the preparations will start for the third exhibition, opening in June on the premises of the new built Vitzthum-Gymnasium. The show will be dealing with the topic of recycling and the commonly by the pupils voted for as the interesting question of re-using, rebuilding or re-interpreting materials, ideas and ideals.

›White Cube / Black Box‹ turns part of the school into a public site for culture and a crystallization point for wishes, ideas and competences that also carry weight outside of school.

Architecture, art and design can convey essential competences that play an important role in regard to one’s own lifestyle, to living together in society and to one’s professional life. The task of building a temporary architecture seeking to combine sophisticated functions is one of the most exciting endeavours for the future and imparts many details of architectural knowledge, from the site plan via the building application all the way to the interior design for an exhibition. In contemporary art, themes are negotiated that we also deal with regarding personal wishes and life plans, worries and hopes. Diverse media are employed: drawing, painting, sculpture, but also video and digital design. The graphic design and communication of a product, whether it is created using traditional or digital media, decisively determines a project’s success. Exhibitions of contemporary art are promoted by flyers and ads, the public is reached via press releases and the successful placing of an event in the media. The design is augmented by public relations. What information is needed, how can an informative text be written for the press, and to whom must it be sent? It must also be carefully considered how the visitors of an exhibition are to be treated on site: How can it be achieved that they are satisfied and inspired when they leave the show? What kind of information on the artistic projects should be communicated to them? How can an exchange with the audience be initiated in a direct conversation, a guided tour or a discussion? And how can one develop questions in a project and come up with one’s own answers that lead to insights and point in new directions for oneself and others?

ZUKUNFT 2050 /
FUTURE 2050

Exhibition of Contemporary Art in School
November 6 – December 5, 2010

Following the successful presentation of the first exhibition on the concept of luxury, the second show of the project is on view from November 06 - December 05, 2010.

The group of architects asked themselves whether the future is round or angular, and designed a complex geometrical exterior facade in dynamic lightweight construction, transforming the containers into an opaque spaceship and inviting visitors to float to the future together. The journey already starts in the entrance area with the drawing of a futuristic airport, the departure and arrival point of various travels to the future depicted in the comics made by Karoline Schmidt’s group. The team of artist Tobias Köbsch deals with the present and what should be kept of it in the future. The result is a part of a present-day teenager’s bedroom whose desk has been transformed into a museal display by preserving everything on it in wax for eternity. Hence, one looks through the eyes of a future museum-goer at what was once valuable to young people in 2010. The team of filmmaker Bernd Kilian didn’t look to the future either, but instead questioned today’s urban and social situations in the face of its strangeness, also seeking the way people in the future will regard the present-day. Three short films on movement, communication and money were produced and is synchronously screened as a triple projection. In addition, the steps and results of the learning and working process of graphic design have been documented in a magazine published in a small edition, which is presented in the show alongside more sophisticatedly conceived posters.

LUXUS / LUXURY

Exhibition of Contemporary Art in School
April 17 – May 16, 2010

The first joint project within the frame of the project ›White Cube / Black Box‹ on the premises of the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium deals with the theme of luxury. What is luxury nowadays? A mansion and many expensive cars? A fountain full of chocolate? A pretty dress? Or rather fresh potatoes in the school cafeteria? In three artistic work groups instructed by the artists Antje Schiffers, Christian Sievers and Cosima Tribukeit, the youths present the artistic results of their personal and research-based ways of dealing with the theme of luxury. Since last October, the groups have been working on the project, developing architectural plans and posters, and interviewing other youths on their conceptions and wishes regarding luxury. The ideas have been implemented with a great deal of imagination and remarkably skilful handicraft work. The bit of abundance and enjoyment of life also enters into realms of life that were hitherto hardly suspicious of being luxurious: In the container one can find the luxury store ›La Tempete‹, with masterly embroidered lab coats and inlays for ordinary backrests of school chairs. An ingrain wallpaper is artistically upgraded by the fleur de lys, and a host of other secrets of making everyday life luxurious await the visitor.

The exhibition and architecture developed with teams of experts from the field of architecture (Roland Züger, studio tz, Dresden), design (Jakob Kirch & Pascal Storz, Leipzig) and art (Cosima Tribukeit, Dresden; Antje Schiffers, Berlin; Christian Sievers, Berlin) are on view from April 17th until May 16th, 2010, in the schoolyard of the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium. The posters and the graphic design of the container’s exterior walls also examine formal aspects of the longing for luxury. The results of the graphic research and the development process leading to the final appearance are documented in a magazine printed in a small edition.
